I ordered a four piece wing meal with yams and mac&cheese, and ordered an additional side of collard greens. I'm SO happy I did, as I think Marjoe's is about to replace the other soul food restaurants permanently for me. So I Yelped this place, and decided to trust fellow Yelpers and give the new joint a shot. I wanted some soul food, but just did not feel like dealing with the inconsistency of both R&R or M&Ms. Wow! I hardly ever visit new places with few reviews on Yelp, but I was visiting my hometown of Carson, and noticed this place popped up next to Louisiana Chicken (which I dislike intensely). This place holds great conversation, but the food was not good at all. Even my half of hamburger bun for bread smh. Everything but the greens went to the trash. Sorry to say I threw up maybe 10 minutes after sampling my dinner and was very light headed from all the salt from the two spoons of macaroni. My turkey chops also tasted as if it was cooked in old grease and this was horrible a corner piece of my meat was very under cooked and fatty. And the mac n cheese was the same as the review stated sort of soup like, and very salty. My greens were okay, but I had to add a Lil hot sauce for them to have a taste. My rice and beans were half crunchy and have cooked. I'm a cook myself and my specialty is fried fish so this was an insult to me and the south. Tried the fish, cooked way too hard and the grease was old, the fish tasted like copper. Now all conversation is over, we out the door.Ĭould not wait to dig in when I got home. Kim responded sure and she was cool about it.īut the her husband insisted that she put some mac n cheese inside my plate anyway so she did. My boi ordered fried fish and red beans and rice.Īfter reading the reviews I then asked was it ok to change my mac n cheese to extra greens. My order was turkey chops, collards, beans and rice. Man it's too late because she had started to cook our food. Now while they were talking I was checking out the reviews and I wanted to change my mind on the food. The vibe was all the way cool, this also came with great conversation.ĭuring the conversation I was told that they had just came in from Vegas. I admit I was a Lil disappointed at first, but then the owners Kim and Joseph walked in and said it was a bit hot inside the kitchen but they were open. When I’m done with all of these memories, (and my house is clean) I’ll take current photos of all of the rooms.Upon arrival we walked inside the establishment and this guy who was hooking up the cable told us that the restaurant was closed. This is the photo I took right after we moved in – when things were still very dusty. The door with the light bulb shining is to the hall and the one on the white wall is to the first closet by the chimney, The door on the blue wall on the right, is to the bathroom. Once they were papered, the work on the floor started. The inside walls were sheet rock – he’s an old hand at that. Once the ceiling was finished, and the walls patched, he tried his hand at plastering. We wanted to save the big beams, which he did, and refinished them. The ceilings on this floor were all very challenging, with many different angles and levels. Luckily, they were just the right size to fit into a closet and act as a divider, giving us a flush wall. We decided to incorporate them into the floor plan (removing them would have been a nightmare). We did, however, have a few chimneys, even if they had been cut off at the roof. They weren’t overly fussy about the state of the walls.Īs is typical of a house this old there were no closets, anywhere. Not there is anything remotely level about the ceilings…. These outside walls required a lot of patching, filling in cracks and building up the tops of the walls so the ceiling would have a level top to rest on. This is the beginning – as always, the framework for the ceiling and the insulation.
